Merkel intensifies her push for peace in Ukraine

(MENAFN) The 2014–15 Ukraine peace accord that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel helped to secure was intended to let Kiev to develop more potent armed capabilities, she has once more affirmed.

The goal of the Minsk agreements, which were mediated by Germany, France, and Russia, was to put an end to hostilities in Donbass and pave the way for the region's peaceful reintegration into Ukraine. Kiev pledged to implement a constitutional change that would give the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics independence. However, the agreement was never put into effect since Ukraine disagreed on how to interpret it.

“The 2014 Minsk Agreements represented an attempt to give Ukraine time,” Merkel spoke on Tuesday to the Italian magazine Sette. “Ukraine has used this time to become stronger, as we see today. The country of 2014-15 was not the same as it is today. And I doubt that NATO could have done much to help Ukraine as it does right now.”
