Following emergency stop, US nuclear aircraft catches fire
(MENAFN) After making an emergency landing in Missouri, a US Air Force stealth nuclear bomber sustained runway damage and caught fire on Saturday.
The B-2 Spirit landed at Whiteman Air Force Base after encountering an "in-flight failure during regular operations," according to a statement from the US Air Force. "After landing, there was a fire related with the aircraft, which the base fire department extinguished."
There were no incidents of injuries as a result of the event, which is currently being investigated. According to KMBC-TV, the ABC News station in Kansas City, Missouri, a still shot from the scene appeared to show smoke rising from the collision site. Another photo appeared to show the bomber resting on the ground with its landing gear disengaged and smoke billowing from behind it.
The B-2 Spirit is billed as "the world's most strategic aircraft" by the 509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman. It was reputedly the world's most costly bomber when it entered service in 1997, costing roughly $1.16 billion per unit ($2.15 billion in 2022).
Another B-2 stealth aircraft was destroyed at Whiteman last year when the left landing gear collapsed upon landing due to a technical problem. The problem was attributed to "worn springs" by the US Air Force.
