Japan Shock Spain To Top Group, Germany Knocked Out

DOHA: Japan made another remarkable fightback to pull off a second major upset at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, shocking Spain 2-1 at the Khalifa International Stadium on Thursday. 

After being completely dominated by Spain in the first half, the Hajime Moriyasu's side scored two goals within 142 seconds to register a stunning win against the 2010 world champions.

Ritsu Doan, who also scored in a shock 2-1 win over Germany in their opening Group E match, came as second half substitute and made an instant impact by netting an equaliser in the 48th minute.

Ao Tanaka scored the winner in 51st minute to seal another memorable victory for the Asian giants in Qatar. 

Spain took the lead early in the match with an 11th minute header by Alvaro Morata. 

Japan as Group E winners will meet Group F runners-up Croatia in last 16 stage on Monday.

After finishing second in the group, Spain will take on Morocco in their Round of 16 clash the following day.

Four-time winners Germany were knocked out of the tournament in group stage for the second successive time despite their 4-2 win over Costa Rica at the same time. They were edged by Spain on goal difference.
