Srinagar- In a five day workshop from 21st to 25th November, 2022, the Department of Political Science, University of Kashmir prepared a Glossary of Political Science in Kashmiri Language.

This is the first of its kind translation exercise in which the glossary of a discipline has been prepared in local language. The workshop was coordinated in collaboration with the Commission for Scientific and technology Terminology (CSTT), Ministry of Education, government of India.

The CSTT is mandated to evolve, define and publish the Glossaries of academic and technological subjects. The Commission is preparing Fundamental Glossaries in three languages namely English, Hindi and all recognized regional languages. The Department of Political Science, KU and the CSTT collaborated for the important academic exercise which will not only benefit the student community of Kashmir to understand the fundamental concepts of the subject in their native language, but is destined to enrich and preserve Kashmiri language.

The workshop was attended by twelve academicians belonging to the disciplines of Political Science, Linguistics, Kashmiri and Sanskrit. Apart from the disciplinary training of the experts, the sub-regional dialectal variation of spoken language was given a due consideration. New Educational Policy (NEP-2020) also lays down an emphasis to promote vernacular languages. The Department of Political Science, KU, took up the initiative quite timely.

In the 5-days workshop, nearly 3900 key terms/ concepts of Political Science and political processes were translated. This would be followed by“Review” of the translated terms/ concepts in a separate workshop. The finalized Trilingual Glossary of Political Science (English-Hindi-Kashmiri) will be published by the CSTT, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, in the form of a dictionary which would be available offline as well as online.
