US Space Force will create its first-ever component command in Indo-Pacific region

(MENAFN) In the Indo-Pacific, where officials have increasingly noted rising tensions with regional rivals like North Korea and China, the United States Space Force is getting ready to establish its first component command.

On Monday, the United States Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) made the announcement and noted that it would be in charge of the new Space Force unit once it launched later in the week. After the Space Force branch was established in late 2019, INDOPACOM, the combatant command in charge of much of East Asia and the Indian subcontinent, would be the organization to initially house a Space Force component.

Though the military provided few details about its precise role, the Space Force unit is expected to improve United States capabilities to detect and intercept ballistic and cruise missiles launched from countries in the region once it is operational.

Lt. Gen. B. Chance Saltzman, the branch's recently appointed chief of space operations, has previously claimed that Beijing is going to be the unit's primary target.
