Yemen FM: Iran conflict was reason for Houthis' refusal of cease-fire

(MENAFN) The rejection by Yemen’s Houthi insurgents to return to a nationwide cease-fire in October was related to Iran’s internal chaos, Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak informed The National on Sunday.

The Iran-backed insurgents refused labors by the UN's special representative for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, to prolong the truce with the globally-recognized administration for an additional six months before it expired in early October. Mr Grundberg had suggested broadening the scope of the contract too.

“We cannot understand the Houthi stance towards the truce without the link to Iran’s internal affairs,” Mr bin Mubarak announced on the bargains of the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain.

Iran has been hit by nationwide anti-administration demonstrations since mid-September that show no indications of ending regardless of a bloody crackdown.

“So the Iranians are trying to use the Houthis as one of the cards they have and this is one of the main reasons why the Houthis are taking such a difficult position,” the foreign minister added.
