Doha: Encouraging positive social entrepreneurship for sustainable development, Maker Majlis participated as a partner in the annual Qatar Youth Power (QYP) conference 2022, joining efforts with national organisations representing academia, business, the private and non-governmental sectors.
QYP is the first and only fully student-led conference in Qatar to empower the country's youth to positively impact their communities through learning from the nation's brightest leaders and change-makers. The second edition took place at Qatar National Library on August 27, welcoming students in Qatar aged 13 to 20 as well as youth from the region who joined the livestream.
Dr. Evren Tok, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Innovation and Community Engagement at CIS, presented the opening session on“Sustainable Development Goals and Social Entrepreneurship”. Both conceptual and practical, the session highlighted a historical case study of how social entrepreneurship can be a catalyst for social change and transformation. Dr. Tok focused on the use of libraries in fostering social and entrepreneurial initiatives which can shed light in today's world where“empowering youth” is a key objective in building more cohesive and resilient societies.
Bayan Khaled, Research Fellow at CIS, presented“Achieving Peace through Online Communities”.
Her session aimed to encourage greater awareness among the students of how they can use social media to make a positive and powerful contribution to their communities.
QYP was launched with a vision to see the next generation of youth in Qatar empowered to take initiative in the local and global community, sparking a chain reaction for future generations to carry impact forward.
Commenting on the contributions by Maker Majilis to advancing this mission, Alina Zaman, Researcher at CIS, said:“From its initiation to its organisation, QYP 2022 brings together tomorrow's climate activists and social entrepreneurs who are our hope for achieving sustainable development and the global goals. Our participation at this year's edition aligns with QYP's aim to embody 'Think globally, act locally', which is part of our ongoing projects focused on developing progressive education-based designs integrated with localised moral values and SDG education, through our research and outreach programmes at CIS and Maker Majilis.”
