Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee, Norway Official Talk Ties, Region

AMMAN — Jordan and Norway enjoy“close historical relations” at all levels, which encourages boosting cooperation in all fields, Head of the Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee MP Khaldoun Hina said on Sunday.

During a meeting with members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence of the Norwegian Parliament, headed by Ine Eriksen Soreide, Hina highlighted the importance of exerting further efforts to enhance cooperation between the two parliaments as well as in the economy, investment and tourism, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The MP also reiterated that the Palestinian cause is the key to regional peace and stability, highlighting His Majesty King Abdullah's role and efforts in reaching a comprehensive and just solution to the issue based on the two-state solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the pre-1967 lines with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital. 

He also stressed the significance of the Hashemite Custodianship in preserving Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, and is its historical and religious role in protecting these sacred sites in the old city. 

Members of the Lower House committee said that the two kingdoms share the same stance regarding the importance of finding comprehensive and just solutions to regional crises, and primarily the Palestinian cause.

They also urged the international community to immediately halt Israeli attacks on unarmed Palestinian civilians.

Meanwhile, the lawmakers called for enhancing commercial and economic exchange between Amman and Oslo, especially given the great challenges facing Jordan. 

They also emphasised Jordan's need to benefit from Norwegian expertise in the energy sector and collaboration on projects to cover water shortages.

Discussions during the meeting also went over issues of mutual interest and means to enhance cooperation between the two countries in addressing various global challenges pertaining to climate change, bolstering food security, countering terrorism, and facing the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Soreide expressed her country's appreciation for the Jordan's role in realising a just and fair solution to the Palestinian issue, stressing the importance of reaching a peaceful solution.

She also said that the recent visit of King Abdullah to Norway has paved the way for enhanced cooperation, partnerships and projects between the two countries, expressing Oslo's keenness to advance economic and commercial exchange with Amman.
