The headboard is an accessory that is often forgotten when furnishing the bedroom. Either because we find it cumbersome and useless or because“the headboard is old-fashioned! '.
But be aware that the latter is coming back to the fore with great modernity! And the headboard even turns into an essential decorative object in a self-respecting bedroom.
Do not see it as a big dark solid wood like in the days of the grandparents, that has changed a lot and it is even a trend to make your own headboard.
7 practical ideas to dress up the space between your wall and your bed!
A 'cosy' decorative element that enhances your room
Originally the headboard sublimated the power of kings, it went up to the high ceilings, and was adorned with thick curtains, similar to the four-poster bed. But obviously all this has evolved a lot since then :-)
If shapes and materials vary, on the other hand the ideal size of a headboard is about 1.20m in height and the width adapted to that of your bed.
Would you like a designer headboard bringing modernity to a bedroom?
Making a headboard yourself: nothing could be easier!
Making your own headboard is quick, simple, and more often than not, it costs you next to nothing.
You still need some basic equipment and a bit of good will if you're not a handyman!
We give you some key tips in hand to make your own custom made headboards.
# Headboard n°1: a rod + a curtain
Dress your bed with a curtain or patterned fabric!
Choose the length of your curtain so that it falls to the floor. Depending on the desired effect, you can either drop it straight or tie it like on a window on both sides of the bed.
To do this, simply fix the curtain rod at the desired height and pass the curtain.
Variations are possible: instead of a curtain, use a fabric, which you will place twice over the rod.
Rod variations? you can absolutely use a solid wooden branch , a broom handle , repainted or natural...
The little + that makes the difference: If you know how to sew, add a pocket to the fabric, which will serve as very useful storage for a book, or a pair of glasses!
# Headboard n°2: a rod + pillows
The rod is placed here lower than in an installation with a curtain so that the pillows are at the height of your back when you are in a seated position.
This solution is practical and more comfortable if you prefer to get up for a little reading.
# Headboard n°3: a wooden board + wadding
The perfect DIY headboard!
Cut a plank of wood of the thickness of your choice. The size should match the width of your bed, but it's very popular to leave the board protruding about 20-40cm on both sides of the bed to include bedside tables. The ideal height is around 1.20m.
You must therefore dress your board with a fabric, or a wallpaper, according to your preferences, but the principle remains the same.
Settle into a room spacious enough to make your headboard. Using a staple gun, attach a layer of batting to give your headboard a soft look.
Then cover everything with the fabric of your choice that you will attach to the back of the medium, again using the staple gun, cut out the pieces of fabric and wadding that protrude, and your headboard is ready!
The +: for a padded effect, simply fix the fabric with upholstery nails. Point regularly and you're done.
Do not hesitate to add layers of wadding for a more pronounced quilted effect.
# Headboard n°4: a wooden factory pallet + paint or varnish
A great 'upcycling' idea for a modern and warm style. In the factory, or in supermarkets, it is sometimes possible to recover wooden pallets...
To slide between your bed and the wall, the palette can be painted after a little sanding. Also trendy natural, just with a little varnish!
A bit Scandinavian, the wooden pallet goes well with both modern and rustic decor.
# Headboard n°5: stickers
Ease of installation, discretion and originality are the first advantages of wall stickers.
The reasons are multiple, you are spoiled for choice! There are some designed for this purpose, with a beautiful padded 'optical effect', others imitating bed bars, or patterned frames.
# Headboard n°6: a shutter
The shutter is a way to dress your wall while keeping a natural spirit, simply placed behind your bed on the floor.
You can replace the shutter with a shutter, or a wooden door , to customize as much as you wish: paint, stain, varnish, sanding...
# Headboard n°7: a wooden shelf
The shelf turns out to be a practical solution, firstly because you can put your personal belongings there , but also decorative objects , or a lamp .
Attach the brackets to the wall with screws, and lay the wooden board on top. The trend is for thick shelves, around 5cm.
Be sure to place it high enough so that it does not get in your way!
