Turkey: Bus crashes into teams responding to accident, killing 15 people, injuring another dozen


(MENAFN) At least 15 people were killed and over twenty injured after a passenger bus collided with rescue personnel treating a previous traffic accident in southern Turkey on Saturday, according to officials.

Suleyman Soylu, the interior minister, tweeted that among those slain on the motorway between Gaziantep and Nizip were three firefighters, two paramedics, and two journalists. He said, "The other eight dead were aboard the bus."

Governor of Gaziantep Davut Gul reported that 22 additional persons were hurt in the incident.

According to the Ilhas News Agency, two of its reporters died after stopping to assist those hurt in the initial collision, in which a car off the road and rolled down an embankment.

Television footage showed the bus lying on its side next to the highway and an ambulance with substantial damage to its rear.

Turkey's track record for driving safety is terrible. According to the government, 5,362 individuals were killed in traffic accidents in 2017.
