(MENAFN) Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist said on Thursday that Sweden may begin producing weapons for Ukraine to aid in fending off Russia's military offensive, but no final decisions have been made.
Speaking to Swedish television station SVT, Hultqvist outlined the three main projects that were brought up during an international donor conference in Copenhagen on Thursday that was attended by defense ministers from 17 different nations. These projects are all aimed at helping Ukraine.
Hultqvist claims that Western countries are preparing for a protracted conflict in Ukraine and are prepared to provide assistance to that nation in the form of military training, mine clearance, and weapon production. Defense ministers also decided to set aside an additional €1.5 billion ($1.54 billion) for military assistance to Kiev at the donor event.
The minister insisted that there is a "big problem" and that Ukrainians need to be trained to clear mines set by Russian forces.
Hultqvist added that different nations may set up production lines for weapons, primarily artillery systems, in order to "manufacture arms and deliver them directly to Ukraine." The minister cited the declarations of readiness from Slovakia, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
“This would mean that our support for Ukraine might become sustainable in the long term. Because the production will serve their needs at all times,” he highlighted.
