At least 6 people died in mountain glacier collapse in Italy

(MENAFN) Authorities stated that 17 people were still missing on Monday in the Italian Alps after a portion of a mountain glacier fell, leaving at least six people dead and eight injured.

The avalanche happened on the Marmolada, the Dolomites' highest mountain at over 3,300 meters, which spans the Veneto and Trento areas of the eastern Italian Alps.

The Marmolada glacier, like many others across the world, has been rapidly eroding in recent decades due to rising average temperatures, and Uncertain factors may have contributed to the ice breaking off, although early summer heatwaves in Italy caused temperatures to suddenly climb, especially on the Marmolada.

In a declaration, Renato Colucci from the National Research Council's (CNR) Polar Sciences Institute remarked, “for weeks the temperatures at high altitudes in the Alps have been well above normal values, while this past winter there has been little snow, which hardly protects the glacial basins anymore.”
