Head of Tunisia's constitution committee has condemned president's draft constitution

(MENAFN) According to the local Assabah daily, the head of Tunisia's constitution committee has denounced President Kais Saied's draft constitution.

Sadok Belaid, a former constitutional law professor appointed by Saied to prepare a "new constitution for a new republic," claimed Saied's version was risky and did not match the constitution committee's original draft.

Belaid stated that the final constitution released by the president involves chapters that could pave the way for “a disgraceful dictatorial regime.”

“…it is our duty to strongly and truthfully announce that the constitution that was officially published… and presented for referendum is not relevant to the constitution we prepared and sent to the president,” he asserted in a letter released by the Assabah newspaper.

The president has not remarked on the constitution since it was published in Tunisia's official gazette on Thursday. The constitution, which would provide Saied much more powers, will be submitted to a vote next month.

On Saturday, the president of the influential UGTT union claimed the new constitution might endanger the country's democracy.
