(MENAFN) On Friday, June 3rd, Donald Trump's former economic advisor Peter Navarro was charged with two charges of contempt of Congress for failing to participate with the investigation into the January 6, 2021 assault of the US Capitol.
Each offense is punished by up to one year in prison and a USD100,000 fine.
Navarro stated that he was detained on Friday, June 3rd, at an airport near Washington. He was released after appearing before a court the following day. His next appearance in court is slated for June 17.
According to a news agency, the former advisor to the former president accused prosecutors of adopting "hardball" tactics by detaining him and not permitting him to make phone calls.
The US House Select Committee on the January 6th Attack demanded that Navarro come in February to give over papers and to testify again in March. Navarro filed a lawsuit against the Select Committee and the Department of Justice on Tuesday, accusing House Democrats of “weaponization of Congress’ investigatory powers.”
