Qatar - Philippine Embassy invites community to join 'Balik Scientist Program' webinar

The Philippine Embassy in Qatar is calling on the Filipino community to join a webinar entitled“Balik Scientist Program” (BSP) second edition on Tuesday, February 15 at 6am.

Philippine Ambassador, H E Alan Timbayan said the online seminar is organised by the Department of Science and technology (DOST) and will be aired at the Balik Scientist facebook Page Live.“It will discuss the process of Balik Scientist's selection of host institution,” he explained. The title of the second episode is“BSP Talks: Kailan ka Babalik” (BSP Talks: When are you coming back?)

The webinar series is aimed to promote the BSP and guide Balik Scientists (returning scientists) in the program's application process. Moreover, it seeks to provide an avenue for a continuous exchange of ideas, challenges, experiences, and more opportunities for previous, recent, and aspiring Balik Scientists, Host Institutions, and other BSP stakeholders, H E Timbayan explained.

DOST's BSP encourages Filipino scientists, technologists, and experts to return to the Philippines and share their expertise in order to promote scientific, agro-industrial, and economic development, including the development of our human capital in science, technology and innovation. The said programme is open to foreign-based Filipinos or foreigners of Filipino descent, with graduate or advanced degrees and internationally-recognised experts in the priority sectors of DOST, who are willing to come back and serve on a short, medium or long term basis, and expertise needed by public and private institutions.

DOST explained that:“Science and Technology experts who are Filipinos, or foreigners of Filipino descent shall be encouraged to return or reside in the Philippines, and share their expertise in order to accelerate the scientific, agro-industrial and economic development of the country. If requirements are complete, the processing of application and admission to the BSP may take at most one month.” According to a data from 2020, DOST revealed that there are a total of 563 Balik Scientist tallied. Among the priority areas include Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources; Health; and Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology.
