São Paulo – The General Consulate of Lebanon in São Paulo announced it would have its own headquarters on Avenida Paulista, obtained through donations from the Lebanese community living in Brazil. Consul Rudy El Azzi signed this Thursday (10) the purchase contract for the new headquarters (pictured above), located at number 1,754 on one of the main avenues in the city of São Paulo. The opening date will be announced soon.

The consulate used to operate in a space rented from the Brazil-Lebanon Chamber of Commerce, also on Avenida Paulista. The consulate expressed gratitude to the entity and donors in a note published on social media.“It is a historic moment for the Lebanese community in Brazil, which will have a more adequate space for operations,” informed the consulate. The name of the donors will appear on a plaque at the new headquarters.

The Lebanese colony in Brazil is composed of immigrants and their descendants. Lebanon is where most people of Arab origin living in the South American country come from, accounting for 27% of the total, according to a survey carried out by H2R Pesquisas Avançadas and the former IBOPE Inteligência at the request of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC). In total, 6% of the Brazilian population is of Arab descent, resulting in about 11.6 million people. The Lebanese community in Brazil has been showing solidarity and helping Lebanon due to the dire economic situation the country is experiencing.
