Jordan - Safadi, U.S. counterpart seek further cooperation

Washington, Jan. 13 (Petra)-- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, on Thursday, held talks with in Washington with his U.S. counterpart Antony Blinken that covered the strong ties that bring together the two countries, in addition to ways to further boost them in various spheres.
The talks touched on the new memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the strategic partnership between the two countries, which frames the US aid for the Kingdom, replacing the current memorandum, which expires by the end of September 2022.
The talks also touched on a number of the Middle East region's issues including the Palestinian cause, the Syrian crisis, supporting Iraq and fighting terrorism.
Safadi said that he is looking forward to signing the new MoU, where the US provided Jordan with annual support over the past four years, which amounted to about $1.65 billion in 2021.
Such MoU, Safadi said, will contribute to supporting economic reforms launched by Jordan, in addition to its positive impact on facing economic challenges.
For his part, Blinked said that the U.S. along with the Kingdom are real partners for the sake of peace, security and stability in the Middle East region and beyond.
The two sides affirmed the continuation of coordination and cooperation in order to resolve regional crises, create economic opportunities and achieve security and stability.
Safadi expressed thanks to the U.S. for announcing additional financial support for UNRWA, amounting to $99 million, last month, in addition to the $318 million it provided last year.
During a panel discussion at the Brooking Institution on the Jordanian-U.S. strategic partnership, Safadi stressed the need to relaunch an active international action to find a real scope for peace in accordance with the two--state solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with Israel.
Also in Washington, Safadi met with a number of representatives of research centers.
