French president denounces ‘inexcusable’ 1961 crimes against Algerian people
(MENAFN) On Saturday, Oct. 16 French President Emmanuel Macron slammed as “inexcusable” the massacre of hundreds of Algerian protestors in Paris 60 years ago by French police.
The president, in a statement, acknowledged and admitted to state aggression on Oct. 17, 1961, where 300 peaceful Algerian demonstrators were murdered.
The presidential office noted he confessed that “the crimes committed that night under the authority of (Paris police prefect) Maurice Papon are inexcusable for the Republic.” Even though he did not release a formal apology.
The declaration further said that France observes its entire history with lucidity and identifies its established duties.
