(MENAFN) Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand Prime Minister formally expressed regret to Pacific groups affected by the Dawn Raids in the 1970s.
Also, a series of severe immigration policies were happening in directed attacks on the Pacific families’ houses between 1974 and 1976, the attacks to find, convict and deport over stayers often occurred very early in the morning or late at night.
Prime Minister stated at Auckland's Town Hall "Today I offered, on behalf of the government, a formal and unreserved apology to Pacific communities for the discriminatory implementation of immigration laws that led to the Dawn Raids."
He also said "Expressing our sorrow, regret and remorse for past actions is the right thing to do and provides an opportunity for closure and reconciliation."
Looking back it was obvious that the immigration laws were biased, according to Minister for Pacific Peoples Aupito, William Sio
William continued "Pacific peoples, Maori and other ethnic communities were specifically targeted and racially profiled, which was wrong and should have never happened."
