France welcomes ceasefire signature between Libyan parties

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Oct 23 (KUNA) -- France on Friday welcomed the signature of a ceasefire agreement between the warring Libyan parties after successful "direct negotiations" in the framework of the "5 + 5" Mediterranean joint military committee and under the aegis of the United Nations.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the accord "shows the aspiration of all Libyans to sovereignty, in the face of external interference".
The agreement is "an important step towards a sovereign, stable and united Libya, which involves the cessation of military operations, the departure of foreign mercenaries from Libyan territory, the dismantling of militias," Paris added.
It includes an agreement to fight terrorism and end violations of the UN arms embargo in place against Libya, the statement noted.
France also welcomed the forthcoming inter-Libyan political dialogue to be held in Tunisia after initial talks were held in Morocco, and it reiterated support for an inclusive process under the aegis of the United Nations, with the aim of the rapid organisation of elections. (end)
