Botox is here to stay with room for new alternatives

It''''''s been almost two decades since Botox gave people a new way to face the world and its appeal is only growing, says expert from Aesthetica Clinic

DUBAI

For Botox fans, here''''''s exciting news: a new kind of injectable neurotoxin has debuted to make all those lines on your face go away. Say hello to Jeuveau, a new, FDA-approved Botox-alternative, that is joining the line-up of injectable neurotoxins including Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin.

How is Jeuveau different? "The botulinum in Jeuveau is prepared using a unique purification process, which makes for a unique formula," says Dr Majd Al Zoughbi, Specialist Dermatologist, Aesthetica Clinic Jumeirah, Dubai. "While Botox is FDA approved for a variety of aesthetic and medical issues, including excessive sweat reduction, Jeuveau is only FDA approved for treating glabellar lines (frown lines) and it may last longer than Botox in this area."

Botox, however, continues to rule. "According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, Botox injections are the most popular cosmetic procedure in the US," says Dr Al Zoughbi.

The most sought-after Botox treatments are for the lines between the eyebrows, called frown lines, glabellar lines, or elevens, crow''''''s feet around the eyes and horizontal creases on the forehead, she says.

Each area has its own specific Botox injection patterns. "The Glabella (more commonly known as the frown line or the lines that look like the number 11 on your forehead) is given Botox that lift the eyebrows and eyelids and open the eyes, giving the face a more attractive look."

Don''''''''t sweat it!

A trending topic of discussion on social media in the UAE is how to block excessive sweating. The hot, humid weather in the region often lays to waste the most rigorous applications of anti-perspirants and deodorants, leaving a soggy, dripping mess of an image in the beholder''''''s eye. Botox steps in here to help. In fact, it''''''s an increasingly preferred antidote to hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating.

"Botox injections use botulinum toxin to block the nerve signals responsible for sweating, preventing the sweat glands from overproduction," says Dr Al Zoughbi. If you feel like a dripping tap in humid weather, if your hands are perpetually damp and your clothes stick to you like unwanted second skin, Botox can tame those overactive sweat glands.

Heard of Baby Botox?

Another trending aspect is the Baby Botox treatment. Many experts call it the mini Botox, a sort of a pick-me-up. "It uses a smaller volume of Botox compared to the normal treatment to smooth fine lines and wrinkles instead of removing them completely," says Dr Al Zoughbi.

But it''''''s not just about the reduced volume of Botox used. "Baby Botox is about the technique," she says. "Micro injections into the skin very superficially deliver the more natural, tailored look. Baby Botox can be used pretty much anywhere on your face, especially in areas we cannot Botox."

And guess what? Botox, Baby or otherwise, is not just for women who have crossed into their 40s. Women in their 20s are also queuing up for early intervention. "For young girls, I usually say that the time to start preventative Botox is when you see a faint line starting to form when your face is at rest," says Dr Al Zoughbi. Also, if you are the animated sort, with a dozen expressions flitting all over your face, Botox can help delay the early onset of expression lines, she says.

The natural process of aging is inevitable but in older women, Botox can help soften the signs of time. "(From your 40s), the fixed and deep lines and wrinkles will not have any improvement from Botox, but it can help diminish the signs of aging significantly," she says.

Botox: The Big Reveal

There is an epic anecdotal belief about Botox: that it actually fills in those deep creases or wrinkles. The truth? It does not. "Botox is not for filling," clarifies Dr Al Zoughbi. "It blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can''''''''t contract. That makes wrinkles relax and soften."

The other, equally epic belief about Botox is that it makes you expressionless. Is it true? Not when it is administered correctly, says Dr Al Zoughbi. "A proper administration of Botox can lead to a very natural and attractive look. But if done incorrectly, it can lead to a ''''''''frozen'''''''' expression."
