Andre Chapman and Dr. Noha Aboelata, CEO of Roots Community Health Center, take to Silicon Valley Community Foundation's popular Philanthropy Now podcast to showcase Unity Care San Jose CA ‘s latest initiative, COVID-19 BLACK, and to discuss ongoing efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the African ancestry community. The episode is part of a series of conversations on racial equity and social justice hosted by the SVCF podcast.
Andre Chapman is CEO of Bay Area-based Unity Care San Jose CA. Unity Care's mission, he says, is to provide quality youth and family programs for the purpose of creating healthier communities through lifelong partnerships. "Our goals are to provide safe, secure, and positive living environments," says Chapman, "to educate and support underserved youth, and to prepare young people to pursue professions in which minorities are chronically underrepresented."
Dr. Noha Aboelata, meanwhile, is a family practice physician who formed Roots Community Health Center to support communities impacted by systemic inequity and poverty.
As the founder of both Unity Care San Jose CA and the Black Leadership Kitchen Cabinet, Andre Chapman has dedicated his life's work to advocating for underserved communities. Chapman has done so, he reveals, while challenging formal system partners on how to effectively engage communities of color. The Black Leadership Kitchen Cabinet was created by Andre Chapman and fellow concerned community leaders as a means to address the social ills that are currently impacting African American communities.
"Earlier this year, I awoke suddenly in the middle of the night thinking about the disproportionate impact that COVID-19 was having upon the Black community," reveals the Unity Care San Jose CA CEO. "I thought about the confusion and misunderstanding surrounding the virus," he goes on, "both within my own family, and within the organization that I lead."
Unity Care San Jose CA CEO Andre Chapman further recognized the lack of trustworthy communications and education about COVID-19 at that time for the Black community, he reports, and, accordingly, felt compelled to take a stand. "From that 4 a.m. brainstorm, COVID-19 BLACK was born," says Chapman.
An initiative of Unity Care San Jose CA in partnership with the Black Leadership Kitchen Cabinet, COVID-19 BLACK aims to educate African Americans not just about how to protect themselves from COVID-19, but also about a number of other health and wellness issues impacting their communities.
