Fake watches worth Dh1.2 billion seized in Dubai

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Counterfeit watches worth over Dh1.2 billion have been seized in Dubai, police officers announced on Monday. The police have seized 29,217 duplicate watches in an operation code-named '60 minutes'.

Two men have been arrested and their business in the Naif area busted, officials said. The suspects used two apartments to store the watches.

A video tweeted out by the police shows cops storming into one of the apartments. It then shows the duplicate watches stored in several suitcases.

Addressing a Press conference, Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jalaf, Director of the criminal investigation department (CID), said the police received a tip-off about the illegal business.

"Our team started investigating the case to track the suspects and locate their whereabouts. Soon after, the crime analysis centre identified two suspects of Asian nationality - who have criminal records - and located the apartments they used to store the counterfeit goods," Brig Al Jalaf said.

The officer attributed the "strong coordination" between government entities and private companies to the success of the operation.
