The benefits of using tinplate packaging over plastic
(MENAFN- VMR News) There are different types of materials used for packaging and all of these materials have some advantages and disadvantages. Metal is also utilized for the packaging of many products, especially in the food, fashion and candles industry. People have been using metal for packaging since they started mining almost 11000 years ago. People usually use metal for making jewelry, tools and weapons. Moreover, people used to make small containers for holding precious items using metal as metal tin containers are really easy to use as compared to other packaging materials. The use of metal in packaging has increased since the industrial revolution.
When we talk about metal, there are many types of metal namely iron and steel. Iron containers are not considered ideal for storing products that contain moisture as moisture can cause rust in iron which can act as a factor for causing life-threatening diseases. That is why most of the containers were made using tin. Tin is a really good metal for carrying food and it was the first choice for the British Navy. Now the industry has begun using stainless steel with a tin coating.
Both metal and plastic are extracted from the earth but these materials are then refined and processed to give them their final form. During the mining process, there are many toxins released that can destroy the ecosystem as the refining process also includes chemicals that result in toxic by-products. The whole process requires energy which is obtained by burning fossil fuels and burning fossil fuels emit gases that are not good for the environment. Besides, the transportation of such materials also requires energy.
On the other hand, metals like tinplate and aluminum can be recycled an infinite number of times and it needs less energy to recycle the material than mining, processing, and refining. They can be molded into any really good shape. So, these metals are really good when it comes to recycling because it reduces damage to the ecosystem and also reduces water, air and land pollution.
Tinplate is made of steel with a tin coating. This tin coating gives it protection against rust. It can also be recycled an infinite number of times. It reduces the consumption of energy during production, causes less water pollution and air emissions and requires less water during production. These are some of the reasons that this material is the most recycled one in Europe. The containers made of steel can easily be detected using a magnet. So, they use large magnets to recover steel.
The global tinplate packaging market is mainly driven by the ongoing urbanization, increased sales of packaged food, growing demand for aerosol products, rising demand for metal packaging in the alcohol industry and increasing consumption of canned vegetables and foods as per a report published by Value Market Research . Also, the growing demand for the product from the pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industry for packaging is again propelling the market growth of tinplate packaging. However, issues associated with steel manufacturing and flexible packaging are likely to hamper the market growth.
However, the production of aluminum is the most energy-intensive. Aluminum is used for making cans for paints, cosmetics, food, etc and the rate of recycling aluminum is also the highest in Europe. Most of the aluminum used in automobiles are recycled but only 60% is recycled from the packaging industry. More than 80% of aluminum is recovered in the whole of Europe and since the recycling process needs less energy and prevents emissions every country should focus on recycling the metal as much as they can.
