(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is to conduct a fresh investigation on Kurunegala based doctor Mohamed Shafi Shihabdeen, who was accused of amassing assets through suspicious means and performing illegal sterilization surgeries.
Dr. Shafi appeared before the Kurunegala Magistrate today.
Dr. Shafi was released on bail in July this year after being arrested and remanded over suspicions raised on the manner he had accumulated assets.
He was later investigated over allegations he performed illegal sterilizations on women preventing them from getting pregnant.
The CID had earlier informed court that there was no evidence to back the allegations against the doctor.
However the CID officer who handled the case fled the country following the change of Government last month.
The CID informed court that a new CID team will investigate the case and obtained permission to record a statement from Dr. Shafi. (Colombo Gazette)
