UPPER DIR: The beautiful Saidgai Lake in Ashiri Darra area of Upper Dir district has the potential to become a great tourist attraction given its scenic beauty and attractive landscape.

Tourists had to travel five to six hours on feet to reach this great tourist site. The lovely glacial lake is situated about 12,000 feet above the sea level. From famous tourist spot Lamchar of Ashiri Darra, tourists travel 16 kilometres distance on feet to reach Saidgai Lake. The trail is very steep and hard and it requires a lot of energy from tourists to reach the lake and then get back. The lake is situated in Hindu Kush Mountain chains and it remains surrounded by thick glaciers throughout the year.

There are many stories about this lake. Mian Tariq Hussain, a resident of Lamchar, said while talking to TNN that his elders say that Saidgai Lake used to be a worship place for believers of Hinduism and Buddhism in ancient times. People from these religions used to gather at Saidgai for worship.

Mian Tariq Hussain said he has personally seen Sanskrit words on the stones in the area. He said Saidgai Lake is about one kilometre long and half kilometre wide. The area receives snowfall for about four to five months in winter. He said that during snowfall period, it is very difficult to approach this area. However, he said, a large number of tourists come to Saidgai Lake from May to end September. He said tourists greatly enjoy the scenic beauty of the lake and surrounding area.

Most tourists visit in the month of July and August as weather in the plain areas of the country in these months remain very hot and tourists come to the lake, situated on the Swat-Dir border area, to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and pleasant weather.

The people of Ashiri Darra have appealed to the government to construct a road leading to Saidgai Lake. They said construction of a road in the area will promote tourism and the world will see the beauty of the area. With promotion of tourism, the local youth will also get jobs.
