Algerians demonstrate for 29th straight week over political impasse

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Algerians yesterday took to the streets in the capital Algiers to demand a political overhaul and the resignation of the country's interim leaders, marking the 29th straight week of anti-government protests.
President Abdelaziz Bouteflika stepped down in early April under pressure from the powerful military and in response to nationwide protests that began on February 22.
However, protests have continued against interim President Abdelkader Bensalah, Prime Minister Noureddine Bedoui and other key Bouteflika-era officials.
Protesters yesterday chanted slogans against the military chief of staff, Gaid Salah, and carried banners reading 'civilian state is OK, but not military.
'The military wants to be involved in political affairs, which runs counter to democracy and the civilian state, Amina bin Nasser, a 33-year-old female protester, said.
On Monday, the army chief said the electoral commission should be summoned on September 15 to set a date for elections, which under Algerian law would take place within 90 days.
