Katara Cultural Village announced yesterday it is launching a permanent Kahraman centre for amber coinciding with the second edition of The Katara International Exhibition for Kahraman to be held from January 8 to 11 next year.
Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, Katara General Manager, said the centre will include a laboratory which will provide various services to amber traders and collectors such as identifying genuine amber, its type and source as well as issuing certification.
Artworks made from amber will also be showcased at the centre which will organize children's activities aimed at teaching them the origins of the hobby of amber collection, its uses and sources of production. The centre will also organize lectures and seminars on acquisition of amber artefacts, Dr. Al Sulaiti added.
Dr. Al Sulaiti also announced Katara will launch two books on amber during the exhibition following the success of another book released at the inaugural exhibition last year, which details amber as part of cultural heritage as mentioned in Arabic literature and research studies done on amber as well as ts types, forms, colours, benefits and prices.
The exhibition, he said, aims to enhance Qatar's position as foremost destination for amber trading and acquisition in the Middle East for manufacturers, traders and collectors as well as researchers and experts in amber.
The exhibition also aims to cement a position as an ideal global platform for promoting and sharing on the future of the amber industry, he added.
The exhibition follows the success of its first edition which witnessed the participation of around 80 stalls representing some of the most important amber manufacturers and traders in Qatar, Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Russia, Poland and Lithuania.
Amber is fossilised resin originating from trees and the seas and the process of their formation takes thousands of years. Amber found in the Arab world is called Kahraman and beads made of natural and authentic Kahraman amber has been famous among the Arabs since ancient times.
The first edition of the exhibition, which ran for three days, showcased not only Islamic prayer beads but also bracelets, ornaments, artworks, antiques and rare objects all made of authentic natural amber with prices ranging from few hundreds to millions of riyals.
The exhibition provided a forum for communication, exchange of experiences and knowledge in the industry in the local and international markets.
