WH unveils economic portion of Mideast peace plan
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, June 22 (KUNA) -- The White House unveiled Saturday the economic portion of its Middle East peace plan, saying "today, we're unveiling Peace to Prosperity: the most ambitious international effort for the Palestinian people to date."
The proposal noted that the "Peace to Prosperity is a vision to empower the Palestinian people to build a prosperous and vibrant Palestinian society."
It indicated "it consists of three initiatives that will support distinct pillars of the Palestinian society: the economy, the people, and the government."
It added "with the potential to facilitate more than USD 50 billion in new investment over 10 years, Peace to Prosperity represents the most ambitious and comprehensive international effort for the Palestinian people to date."
It affirmed that "it has the ability to fundamentally transform the West Bank and Gaza and to open a new chapter in Palestinian history-one defined, not by adversity and loss, but by freedom and dignity."
"These three initiatives are more than just a vision of a promising future for the Palestinian people-they are also the foundation for an achievable plan," it stressed.
It noted that "following the adoption of key policy reforms and the construction of essential infrastructure, Peace to Prosperity envisions extraordinary private-sector investment in entrepreneurship, small businesses, tourism, agriculture, housing, manufacturing, and natural resources."
It affirmed "the goal of early-stage investment will be to remove constraints to growth and to target key projects that build momentum, generate jobs, and increase gross domestic product (GDP)."
The White House announced in May that Bahrain, in partnership with the US, will host the "Peace to Prosperity" economic workshop in Manama on June 25-26, saying "this workshop is a pivotal opportunity to convene government, civil society, and business leaders to share ideas, discuss strategies, and galvanize support for potential economic investments and initiatives that could be made possible by a peace agreement."
