Qatar, Botswana discuss ways to expand, strengthen cooperation

Doha: Qatar and Botswana have discussed ways to expand and strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two friendly countries, and agreed to form a joint committee between the two countries under the chairmanship of their respective foreign ministers to follow up and strengthen this cooperation, especially in the field of investment.

The committee will hold its first meeting during this year in Qatar or Botswana at a date to be agreed upon between the parties.

At the invitation of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the President of the Republic of Botswana, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, paid an official visit to the State of Qatar from April 14 to 16.

H H the Amir and President held a session of official talks at the Amiri Diwan on Monday.

The two sides stressed the strength of bilateral and friendly relations between the two countries and their keenness to promote and develop them in various fields, especially in economic, trade and political fields, in multi-faceted cooperation and in continuous communication at the official and popular levels.

There was also extensive discussion during which views were exchanged on a number of regional and international issues of common concern, including the situation in the Middle East and Africa. The two sides stressed the importance of a peaceful solution to all regional and international issues through dialogue.

During the meeting between the Botswana businessmen and the Qatari Businessmen Association (QBA), the QBA expressed interest in investing in the Republic of Botswana in the fields of agriculture, hotel and infrastructure.

During the visit, a number of memorandums of understanding were signed including MoU in defence cooperation, MoU in political consultations, MoU in the field of culture, MoU in the fields of youth and sports.

At the end of the visit, President Masisi expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to H H the Amir for warm welcome and hospitality accorded to him and his accompanying delegation during his visit. The President invited H H the Amir to visit Botswana at a date to be agreed upon through diplomatic channels.
