Qatar- Adopt healthy lifestyle, emphasise experts

Doha: As the National Spot Day being marked today with a slew of events held across the country, experts emphasise the need of adopting a healthy lifestyle with a commitment.

Dr Buthaina Ibrahim Alowinati, a senior consultant at the National Diabetes Center at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has urge people to make a resolution on National Sport Day to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

'Sport activities shouldn't be limited to one day. Regular physical activity has been shown to significantly improve quality of life. Physical activity, especially exercise is an essential part of treatment many diseases, especially lifestyle diseases.

If you are healthy you will have more strength and happiness, she told The Peninsula.

'Doing physical exercise should be adopted into day to day life.It should be made compulsory at schools, so students learn it as a habit from childhood, she added.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle has its long-term benefits and it helps in the prevention of getting certain diseases like the heart attack, diabetes, and stroke.

'Adopting a healthy lifestyle is a way of living. But making lifestyle changes is not always easy, but it is the key to long-term weight loss and good health. It is important that you exercise and eat right so that you avoid such diseases.

Ensure that you watch the diet, and the lifestyle choice that you choose should be the best, said Dr Jowhara Al Qahtani, Surgery Resident at HMC.

Dr Al Qahtani, herself a marathon runner said that she lost about 25kg of her by adopting a healthy lifestyle through self realisation. She has completed four marathons and preparing for the fifth race.

'Qatar has offered a lot for people who wished to change their lifestyle like parks and recreation facilities. Now even restaurants offer healthy food and display the calorie measurements. Running and cycling events have increased. We see more people adopting healthy lifestyles and being active, she said.

Dr Al Qahtani was also an ambassador of Sahtak Awalan - Your Health First initiative of Weill Cornel Medicine - Qatar.

Qatar is one of the only nations in the world to dedicate a national holiday to sport.

The initiative is in line with Qatar's National Vision 2030 and the country's clear commitment to a future that supports a healthy population by encouraging good lifestyle choices and promoting public health.
