Ms. Reed notes that manual research as well as checking records and files at a courthouse or a repository such as recorder of deeds is still necessary for many State law issues. While the internet can be a good start to identify where records may be located, manual research may be necessary in many cases.

Hybrid Research: Something is online, but additional "manual" work is required: For some issues, the internet is a good starting point, but additional work may be required. For example, for the expunction (expungement) of criminal records in North Carolina, the basic forms and instructions are available online, but the petition must nevertheless be assembled in hardcopy and additional research for specific cases may be necessary.
