(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Ukraine is actively working on a package of sanctions related to an act of aggression committed by Russia in the basin of the Black and Azov Seas.
President Petro Poroshenko said this during a press conference held at the Mystetskyi Arsenal in Kyiv on Sunday, December 16, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
'On the Azov sanctions, I'd like to emphasize that Ukraine is actively working on a package of sanctions related to Russia's act of aggression in the basin of the Black and Azov Seas, Poroshenko said.
He noted that the first sanctions had been already adopted by Lithuania at the national level.
Poroshenko also stressed that during his visit to Brussels on December 12-13, an absolute majority of countries confirmed their readiness to apply sanctions, and a corresponding range of tools was created that determined which sanctions were the subject of discussion.
As reported, on November 25, Russian border ships committed aggressive actions against Ukrainian vessels that set sail from the port of Odesa to the port of Mariupol. Russian special forces fired on and captured three Ukrainian vessels and 24 sailors in the Kerch Strait.
On November 26, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a law approving the decree of the President of Ukraine on the imposition of the martial law for 30 days in 10 regions of Ukraine in connection with the aggression of Russia.
On December 13, the European Council declared its conclusions regarding the events in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. In particular, Clause 8 of the conclusions was entirely devoted to Russian aggression in the Sea of Azov and the development of the situation in the Kerch Strait and in the region as a whole.
Ukraine insists on the introduction of new international sanctions against the Russian Federation in connection with its aggression in the Azov and Black Seas.
