Zarqa, Dec 8 (Petra) –– European Union (EU) Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stilianides Saturday toured the Syrian refugee camp in Zarqa to look first-hand on the conditions of refugees and European Union aid to them.

"The European Union is still committed to supporting Jordan, which hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees, where we fund emergency education projects so that no children are left out. Syrian refugees should enjoy the same quality of education as any other child," Stilianides said, thanking Jordan for its generosity towards the refugees.

The EU had provided over €344 million in humanitarian assistance to the refugees since 2012 to ensure that health, food and basic services are delivered, and to meet the needs of refugees during the winter, including shelter, water and sanitation, psychosocial support and protection programs, he pointed out.

He said the EU's total humanitarian aid to Jordan in 2018 amounted to 36 million euros, which mainly benefited refugees in the Zaatari and Azraq camps, as well as Syrians in urban areas and in the Al-Sater area, adding that the aid included the provision of basic services to most needy Jordanian families in villages and towns across the Kingdom.

Stilianides said that the EU has launched a program to offer primary and secondary education for hundreds of refugee children in Jordanian schools, and also provides other programs for women and children.
