Kuwait Dive Team removes abandoned fishing nets in Shuwaikh port

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, Nov 17 (KUNA) -- Kuwait Dive Team, affiliated with the Environmental Voluntary Foundation, removed abandoned fishing nets from nine-meters depth of Shuwaikh port's waters in cooperation with Kuwait Port Authority.
The nets contained hundreds of dead and alive fish and sea creatures, weighed approximately two tons, and were few meters away from Shuwaikh station for water distillation and power generation, Waleed Al-Fadhel, the team's leader, told KUNA Saturday.
They were strewn across the navigation channel leading to Shuwaikh port, posing a major hazard for ships, boats, and the power and water station, especially since they were fishing nets of high-density polyethylene, added Al-Fadhel.
Such incidents are a main cause for sea pollution and have a negative impact on the marine environment, he said, noting his team exerts a maximum effort to limit them.
Al-Fadhel stressed importance of increasing punishment against fishermen who violate maritime laws, particularly fishery, in order to stop such violations in Kuwait sea and preserve sea life. (end) zak.ma
