Paris, Nov. 11 (Petra)- Princess Sumaya Bint El Hassan, UNESCO Special Envoy for Science for Peace, launched the World Day of Science for Peace and Development 2018 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

The event aims to highlight the key role of science and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging and important contemporary issues relevant to science.

In her speech at the celebration marking the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Princess Sumaya said efforts are being made to enable science in all societies to ensure that all peoples share the benefits of scientific knowledge, stressing the importance of strengthening the human rights link to science.

Princess Sumaya said Jordan has last year hosted the World Science Day for Peace and Development as part of the World Science Forum 2017 under the theme "Science for Peace," where UNESCO took part in the event with a group of scientists and policy makers.

In her capacity as President of the Royal Scientific Society, she voiced her appreciation for the commitment of many Jordanian and Arab youth to achieve the goal of science for all.

She praised the pivotal role of UNESCO, which seeks to enrich scientific advancements and facilitate access to them by all.

UNESCO established the World Science Day for Peace and Development in 2001 and is celebrated annually on 10 November.
