Jordan- Education minister receives Dutch foreign trade minister

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, June 24 (Petra) -- Minister of Education, Azmi Mahafzah, and Dutch Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Sigrid Kaag, and her accompanying delegation, on Sunday, discussed prospects for extending Dutch assistance to support education sector in Jordan in light of the ongoing Syrian crisis.

Mahafzah highlighted challenges posed by the Syrian refugee crisis to various sectors in Jordan, especially education, and led to an increase in the number of schools operating double shifts and overcrowded classrooms, which forced the ministry to rent more schools.

He pointed to the ministry's need to build 60 new schools each year to accommodate the large increase in the number of students either the regular increase or that resulting from receiving refugees due to political crises in the region.

Jordan, despite its economic difficulties and challenges, is committed to providing suitable educational opportunities for all students, whether Jordanians or refugees of all nationalities, the minister said, calling on the international community to meet its commitments pledged by the London donors conference to support Jordan.

Mahafzah lauded the support the Netherlands had announced to Jordan in the coming years as part of the new international cooperation program within the sectors of agriculture, trade, education, vocational training and technical education.

The Dutch minister commended Jordan's role toward Syrian refugees in various fields, noting that the Dutch government is aware of the magnitude of challenges facing Jordan as due to the Syrian crisis.

Minister Kaag spoke about her country's aid for countries affected by the Syrian crisis, especially Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, indicating that the aid to Jordan will be directed to support the education sector, especially programs of non-formal and vocational education.

She underlined the Netherlands' keenness to provide all necessary expertise to help Jordan develop its educational system, especially in the field of vocational education.
