Work of Mesaimeer Pump Station & Outfall Tunnel begins

DOHA: The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal' has started the construction work of the Mesaimeer Pump Station and Outfall Tunnel projects, which will provide a sustainable solution to discharge surface and storm water.

Dr Eng Saad bin Ahmad Al Muhannadi, President of ‘Ashghal' inaugurated the project's works in the presence of officials from the Drainage Networks Projects Department, and representatives of the supervision consultants and contractor.

The total cost of the project is QR920m and it includes the construction of pumping station with 10 pumps and auxiliary facilities.

The pumping station will be located at the end of Mesaimeer Tunnel south of Hamad International Airport. The project also includes the construction of a 10km tunnel with a 3.7 metres diameter.

The pumping station will operate at a capacity of 19.7 cubic metres per second, its function is to pump water from Mesaimeer Tunnel, which was completed in 2016, to the new outfall tunnel.

It is worth noting that the project is designed to ensure the preservation of the marine environment, as the water, which will be pumped complies with the environmental assessment standards, and it is discharged 10km off-shore to reduce the effect on the marine environment.

The project is scheduled to be complete in Q4, 2021, with a maintenance and operation period of three years.

Mesaimeer Pump Station and Outfall Tunnel is the second phase of the Mesaimeer Surface and Ground Water Drainage Tunnel Project, which will provide a sustainable solution for the discharge of surface and storm water.

Mesaimeer Tunnel was completed in late 2016 and it is one of the projects implemented by Ashghal in the development of drainage networks.

In 2017, the project won the global best project award in the wastewater category, during the Engineering News Record (ENR) Global Best Projects Awards in New York City, in the presence of a group of the largest international companies executing global construction projects.
