Qatar Foundation to start new STEM school

Doha: Qatar Foundation (QF) has announced the launch of Qatar Academy for Science and Technology (QAST), a new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) school under the umbrella of its Pre-University Education (PUE).

QF's PUE includes the academies of Doha, Sidra, Musherib, Al Wakrah, Al Khor, Qatar for Leaders, as well as the Academic Bridge Program.

In a press conference, PUE President Buthaina Ali Al Nuaimi said that QAST will open from 2018-19 to 40 students in the ninth grade to be a new and distinctive addition to Qatar Foundation's school chain, serving a diverse group of students in science and technology.

Al Nuaimi explained that the launch of this academy aims at honing the abilities of talented students to be the leaders and innovators, as well as building a distinctive generation in different paths that is innovative and in line with the requirements of the 21st century in facing the challenges of local and global reality, as well as to prepare students to succeed in institutions of higher education excellence and provide the labor market with youth capable and committed to serve the nation and the world, through partnership with public institutions and the private sector and linking what students learn in practice.

She stressed the importance of this academy in shaping the future of Qatar and achieving its national vision 2030 and the vision of the institution based on building a diversified and sustainable knowledge economy, and it reflects the firm commitment of the institution to contribute to the development of the state through education and science.

The PUE president added that Qatar Foundation has adopted a program that focuses on the development of scientific skills and innovative thinking, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge in finding practical solutions to the challenges facing the world, by providing a specialized environment, run by well-known science, technology, engineering and math experts, students will be most prepared to pursue their future science and technology studies.

For his part, QAST Director Gregory J. Moncada said that the programs and courses offered by the academy are designed to ensure success at the university level, where the student will study within four years an integrated system of subjects that contribute to enhance the potential of students to meet the major challenges facing Qatar and the world.

He added that the curriculum was designed to enhance students' abilities in engineering and technology, computer programming and the development of their thinking through a series of training processes, programs and research projects, relying on specially designed classrooms and benefiting from the great potentials, equipment and facilities available at Qatar Foundation, as well as involve students in non-classroom activities and help them solve problems related to abilities and ways to rely on critical thinking.

Moncada expressed his great enthusiasm for the opening of this Qatar-based science and technology school which will provide world-class education to students based on teachers and unmatched facilities in the country. He pointed out that the teachers chosen to teach in this academy were carefully chosen among the best experts in STEM.

He added that the facilities of the school are characterized by high-quality, and the designed programs of the academy will meet the needs of each student, stressing that this will allow the formation and graduation of a generation of leaders in the fields of science and technology.

The QAST director said that the academy will open its doors to students in August to host about 40 students in the ninth grade. The selected students must meet the academic criteria mentioned in the application and show their interest in science.
