Oman- The Royal Hospital uses novel procedure to treat patient with facial pain

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Royal Hospital, represented by the Pain Clinic, recently performed, for the first time in the sultanate, the radiofrequency intervention procedure to treat trigeminal neuralgia on a 65 year old lady.

The patient was suffering from right-sided intractable facial pain, stated a press release.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition which causes intense and extreme episodes of pain in the face. The episodes are often like 'electric shocks', lasting from a few seconds to several minutes. Aged females are the main sufferers but it can occur in anyone. Most of the time, the cause is identified near the brain. It is thought to be caused by compression of the trigeminal nerve by a loop of artery or vein. Despite many oral medications, this type of pain often continues for months and years.

Radiofrequency intervention is one of the best options with good scientific basis to treat trigeminal neuralgia. Most of the time, it is a day-care procedure. Side effects or complications are minimal. Pain relief usually lasts for a long time, though it varies in individual patients.

The patient confirmed, after two weeks, that the pain was reduced by 70 per cent and her quality of life remarkably improved.
