Two soldiers killed by roadside bomb in Egypt's Sinai

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Two Egyptian military personnel were killed in a bomb blast Monday in the restive Sinai Peninsula, according to a local security source.
An explosive device went off as an armored military vehicle passed through the North Sinai city of Rafah, the source told Anadolu Agency.

"An officer and an army conscript were killed and five others injured," he said.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, on which the Egyptian army has yet to comment.

The incident occurred as the army launched a fresh campaign against suspected militants in the North Sinai cities of Rafah and Arish.

In a related development, five policemen were injured Monday in an attack in the Nile Delta region, according to a second security source.

According to the source, gunmen opened fire on a security patrol in Egypt's Beheira province, wounding five policemen.

Egypt has been roiled by violence and turmoil since the military deposed Mohamed Morsi, the country's first freely elected president, in mid-2013.

Since Morsi's ouster and imprisonment, militants have staged numerous attacks on army and security personnel, particularly in the volatile Sinai Peninsula, which shares border with both Israel and the Gaza Strip.
