3 UAE soldiers killed in Yemen
(MENAFN- Arab News) DUBAI: Three soldiers from the UAE have been killed while taking part in a Saudi-led military campaign against the Houthi group UAE state news agency WAM said.
Saudi Arabia and a coalition of Arab states have been fighting since March to restore Yemen's government and to repel the Iran-allied Houthis.
At least two other UAE soldiers have been killed in Yemen since the offensive began.
The coalition has been supporting pro-government fighters with airstrikes military training and the delivery of tanks and heavy artillery and the Houthis have suffered weeks of setbacks.
Gulf-backed southern Yemeni fighters who are based in Aden made gains against the Houthis in heavy fighting in the southern province of Dalea on Saturday.
Military sources in Aden said that pro-government forces in Yemen strengthened by tanks newly supplied by a Saudi-led coalition have launched an offensive to retake the Houthi-occupied capital of Abyan province.
They said a two-pronged drive on the southern province's capital of Zinjibar was launched from the north and south.
It came two days after tribal and military sources said Saudi Arabia had sent new military equipment to Yemen.
The tanks were part of a package including other armored vehicles and personnel carriers as well as hundreds of Yemeni soldiers trained in Kingdom a military source said.
This week has seen fierce fighting in Zinjibar and heavy coalition air strikes against positions of the 15th Army Brigade allied to the Houthis.
The coalition has since March 26 supported loyalists with air strikes aimed at halting advances by the Houthis.
But pro-government forces retook Aden last month and seized the key airbase of Al-Anad to its north on Tuesday.
On August 3 Al-Hayat newspaper reported that a total of 1500 troops most of them from the UAE had entered Aden.
The International Committee of the Red Cross head arrived Saturday in Sanaa at the start of a three-day visit to assess the situation in Yemen.
'The human cost of this conflict is such that no family in Yemen today has been left unaffected' Mauer said ahead of his visit.
It was not clear if Mauer will visit Aden.
