Saudi inmates safe in Lebanon jail: Envoy
(MENAFN- Arab News) JEDDAH: Amid growing concern over reports of torture in Romieh prison Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Asiri has assured the families of Saudi prisoners in that jail that they are safe and under the care of the embassy.
'We are in constant touch with them and we have been assured about their condition after the recent developments. I would like to assure everyone that they are receiving special attention' Assiri said over telephone Monday evening a local daily repored.
There are six Saudi inmates in Romiah five of them terror suspects and the sixth is an accused in a drug-related crime. He said that plenty of dates were supplied to the Saudi inmates during this Ramadan and that medical aid to them was ensured besides facilitating visits of relatives.
In another development relatives of the Lebanese soldiers kidnapped by Al-Nusrah front and Daesh are worried about their safety following threats by the terror organizations that the hostages would be ill-treated. The relatives appealed to the government to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of their sons.
Angry protests are continuing in Lebanon over the recordings showing severe beating and ill-treatment of detainees in the Romieh prison. The Lebanese authorities have announced prosecution of two security officials by a military court for their involvement in the torture of detainees.
Lebanese Justice Minister Ashraf Riefi has said in a press conference that the torture of detainees is a serious violation of human rights and should be punished. He also assured that the prisoners' rights would be protected.
It is also reported in the media that the public protest against the torture in Romieh prison was focused in Tripoli. Leader of the Future Party Saad Al-Hariri called the interior and justice ministers demanding legal action against the culprits.
