Qatar- Citizens interact too little with Municipal Council

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Around 89% of Qataris do not interact with members of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) except during the election period, a new survey by Qatar University (QU) has revealed.

Local Arabic dailies Monday published the findings of a survey conducted by QU's Social and Economic Survey Research Institute on CMC elections.

The study pointed out that Qataris aged 45 years or older were more aware of the importance and role of the civic council.

Around 26% of those who took part in the survey said they did not vote because the council had no executive or legislative authority, while 39% of the participants said they did not take part in the process because they did not have the time to vote.

Only 25% of the participants felt that the election was an effective process, while 44% believed that voting was a national duty.

Some 800 Qataris participated in the survey, which was conducted through phone calls.

The fifth round of CMC elections took place on May 13.
