IGA Istanbul Airport Celebrates Seventh Anniversary
(MENAFN) As it celebrates its seventh anniversary on Wednesday, IGA Istanbul Airport, Türkiye’s international gateway, has served over 400 million travelers to date.
Covering an expansive area of 76.5 million square meters (823 million square feet), the airport officially opened on Oct. 29, 2018.
The ceremony featured Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and then-Parliament Speaker Binali Yildirim, joined by more than 50 distinguished guests from across the globe.
The inauguration was attended by heads of state and government from Albania, Serbia, Qatar, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Moldova, Pakistan, Sudan, Bosnia, and Bulgaria.
Since its opening, the airport has positioned Istanbul as a central hub in global aviation, excelling in both passenger traffic and cargo movement. Its expansive terminals, independent runways, and extensive social and dining facilities have contributed to this status.
IGA Istanbul Airport features a 53,700 m² (578,022 ft²) duty-free zone, along with approximately 181 shops and 114 restaurants and cafes.
The main terminal alone covers 1.4 square kilometers (0.87 square miles) and is designed to accommodate up to 90 million passengers annually.
At full operational capacity, the airport’s infrastructure supports transportation for 200 million passengers and connects them to over 350 destinations each year.
