China April trade declines amid weak demand

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) China's foreign trade weakened in April due to weak demand at home and abroad, government data showed Friday.

Exports declined 6.4 pct from a year earlier, down for the second consecutive month. The drop followed March's 14.6 percent plunge, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs.

Imports by the world's second-largest economy tumbled 16.2 pct from a year earlier for the sixth straight monthly fall, compare to a drop 12.7 percent in March.

The monthly trade surplus marked USD 34.13 billion, as exports still exceeded the imports despite a plunge in such as coal shipments.

The Chinese government lowered its annual target of increasing foreign trade to around 6 percent for this year, from the 7.5 pct goal last year.
