Qatar- Traffic safety meet looks to replicate Swedish model

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Vision Zero Qatar-Sweden, a two-day conference on traffic safety will begin at the Ritz-Carlton hotel today.

The conference, a collaborative project of the National Traffic Safety Committee at the Ministry of Interior, Swedish Embassy, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Maersk Oil Qatar will share the Qatari and Swedish experiences related to traffic safety.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, Brigadier Mohamad Al Malki, Secretary of the National Traffic Safety Committee said that the conference will bring together experts and specialists in the field of traffic safety.

The aim of the conference is to introduce the Swedish experience which is known as Vision Zero and see how it can help Qatar.

Nine Swedish experts who have supervised the application of this project will attend the conference, he added.

Brigadier Mohamed Saad Al Kharji, Director of Traffic Department and Deputy chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee expressed hope that the conference would come out with decisions that can help reduce traffic accidents.

Dr Wafa Al Yazeedi, acting chairperson of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at HMC said that Vision Zero launched in 1997 aims to reach zero deaths by accidents and serious injuries and this vision depends on the principle not to exchange health and human life with physical benefits.

The Swedish Ambassador to Qatar, Ewa Polano, thanked the initiative and said Qatar can benefit from the Swedish experience, especially because it has witnessed a construction boom in the past years. He said Sweden has ranked first in the world in terms of reducing traffic accidents thanks to Zero Vision, launched about 15 years ago.

Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad Al Thani Deputy Managing Director, Maersk Oil Qatar said his company was very excited to be playing a role in this latest road safety initiative.
