Pakistan- Lawyer says Dr Shakil Afridi may be released next month

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: The jail term of Dr Shakil Afridi, who helped the American CIA in tracking al-Qaeda chief Osama bin laden in Abbottabad, will complete next month after which he may be released, his lawyer claimed.

Shakil Afridi's lawyer Qamar Nadeem Advocate told BBC that his client's imprisonment will come to an end next month with the acceptance of clemency appeals and hoped that he will be released next month. He said Dr Afridi was handed 33 years imprisonment in four cases, however, his sentence was reduced by 10 years after acceptance of his appeal.

Dr Afridi was shifted from Peshawar Jail to an undisclosed location over security concerns on Friday. Some media reports claimed that he was shifted to the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Dr Afridi was arrested in May 2011 by intelligence agencies for arranging a fake vaccination campaign in Abbottabad at the behest of the American CIA to track down Osama bin Laden. He was then sentenced to 33 years in jail after charge of maintaining links with militant outfits were proved against him. However, Dr Afridi denied these charges.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had requested the federal government several times to shift Dr Afridi to safer location due to security concerns in KP.
