A 24-year-old Vietnamese migrant worker who appeared to be mentally unstable and attacked motorcyclists in Nantou county, central Taiwan, on Tuesday was arrested for allegedly using violence or threats, obstructing officers in discharge of their duties and damaging property.

The man, who was later found to have run away from his previous employer and been without legal status for two years, was seen shirtless in Zhushan town of Nantau county, The Real Daily reported.

He reportedly stood at an intersection and harassed passing motorcyclists by breaking the mirrors of the vehicles.

When two police officers approached the man, he allegedly resisted arrest by punching them in their faces and scratching them.

Passers-by came forward and together they stopped the man, who was believed to be not mentally sound.

One police officer sustained scratches on his arms and his uniform was torn, while his partner suffered injuries to his face and one elbow.

The suspect was taken to the Zhushan Precinct of the Nantou County Police Bureau. Blood samples were taken to see if he had been taking illicit drugs.
