(MENAFN- KNN India) WB govt to showcase tribal culture to boost tourism in the hills
Kolkata, Apr 23 (KNN) In an attempt to boost tourism in hills, the West Bengal government has come up with the special plan of developing cultural tourism by showcasing the customs, food habits and rituals of different tribal groups.
In this direction, CEO of WBKVIB, Mrityunjoy Bandopadhyay said that the board has signed a MoU with 15 culture development boards in the hills to make tribal culture a centre of attraction for tourists.
In addition to this, to increase the footfalls of tourist in the hills, folk centres will be set up where the tribal will be able to showcase their traditional dress, weapons, musical instruments and other specialties of their culture, he added.
In this regard, 8 development boards have earmarked the land for folk art centres and each board will be allocated a sum of Rs 2 to 3 lakh where handicrafts of the tribal will be displayed for sale.
The state Finance department has allocated a budget of Rs 15 crore for the project, a senior official of WBKVIB said in a press interview.
With large numbers of tribal in the region, the state has an added advantage of bringing tourists to the region as different tribal groups have different forms of dances, songs, culture, dresses and festivals to present.
The state Tourism department, under the instruction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has special plans to promote the Hills among domestic and international tourists, particularly after the shutdown by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), which had spanned a period of more than 100 days.
West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board has been entrusted with responsibility of executing this project that comes under the aegis of State Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) department. (With inputs from a media report) (KNN/YV)
